Creative Vision

Read whatever…

Take a breath.

Some of our best writing comes from just reading about whatever, preferably some good stuff—old or new. It doesn’t have to be in the same genre. In fact, a lot of times when I’m in the flow, it’s probably because I’ve read some beautiful work from the ancient sages. I appreciate the non-robotic feel of what happens when I forget about deadlines, even if just for a half hour. Take some time to read for pleasure.

We are always looking for how to keep our creativity spilling out of us, but when do we recharge? Stop. Read for the beauty of it. Look on the bookshelves for the old, dusty prose tucked away on the highest shelf. See the difference in the way the texture of the words is woven compared to most writing styles that we see today.

Writer Hack:
When the writing day is done, grab a creative form of writing that is completely unrelated to your genre, or even to your generation. Take time to explore the style of the writer—not so much for reading comprehension, but for eloquence and structure. You’d be surprised.
