Creative Flow Doesn’t Always Kick In

There have been times when that creative flow just doesn’t kick in on demand, but don’t let it get you down. It’s like life—you pick up the pen, or the laptop, and you start tinkering around to find your voice.

It’s not so different than weeding out a garden; you know what flowers to keep and crabgrass to throw out.

Old Media Hack

Save your words and your drafts, preferably in two or three places — cloud if you like, also an external. I have two externals. I always remember how Hemingway lost his manuscript and how that impacted him. There’s nothing sadder than seeing a near-completed document deleted before your eyes.

When you save your words, all your words, all your drafts, you are not worried about if you left something out or forgot something — it’s all there, including prior drafts. It’s the oldest trick in the book, but it works.

Tip: By the way, an old media trick is to never throw away your words, at least not when the story is in progress. Always do the reporter’s end of story — 30 —
