We Write.
Explore your imagination. Express your thoughts and feelings. Craft your stories to entertain and inspire.
Sounds easy, right?
None of us get to that place without the coveted first free write. Put the editor in your head away. Forrgett the spelling (yes, even that) — for now. Don’t overthink it. Whether you’re an aspiring writer or looking to improve your skills, there are several tried-and-true practices to guide you on the path.
Writing Is Doing.
At the most foundational level, some say writing requires inspiration. That’s part of it, no doubt. But inspiration comes in the process of writing — of exploration. It’s the act of doing the thing.
As a longtime reporter, I’ve written thousands of stories and honestly, I was probably inspired only about 20 percent of the time. Most of those moments came from capturing the backstories of people who had battled great odds — people like us. They made it to the other side.
Creativity Happens — In Spite Of.
Some of our best storytelling comes through headaches, stomachaches, and heartaches — because the mortgage must be paid. I’ve written stories about happy places while in deep emotional writhing pain. And that’s where the craft kicks in.
Creativity Comes From Within.
It’s in there. We’ve all lived it. It rolls off the fingertips as long as you ignore the screaming voices telling you that you missed a word, misspelled a word, or missed the point.
Stop the inner critic and get through that first coveted draft.
You’re not alone in this.
