Kids Read Books Too — And Apparently, They’re Reading a Lot
Zippia statistics report that the U.S. book industry for this category made $29.33 billion in revenue in 2021. Including both self-published and commercially published titles, over 4 million new books were released in 2022.
Good News in a Down Year
According to Publishers Weekly, as of May 2022:
-
Children ages 4 through 8 accounted for 43% of sales
-
Middle readers (ages 9–12) accounted for 30%
-
Teens and youth (ages 13–22) made up 14%
And that’s during a down year — what with all the post-pandemic stressors.
There’s still room for growth in the genre.
Pro Tip: Get a good illustrator — and remember, every book and every plot needs an antagonist and a protagonist, especially if they are rabbits, tigers, and bears.
